Rožmberk Pond is the largest pond in the Czech Republic and has rightfully earned the nickname “the South Bohemian Sea.” It was constructed between 1584 and 1590 by Jakub Krčín of Jelčany, a master of fishpond engineering, and remains one of the most significant works of the Třeboň Pond System. An interesting fact is that the pond’s dam is over 1.5 kilometers long and offers beautiful walks with views of the water and surrounding forests.
Today, Rožmberk is not only an important economic pond but also a symbol of traditional fish farming in South Bohemia. Every autumn, a ceremonial fish harvest takes place here, attracting thousands of visitors from across the country – in 2025, it will be held from October 17 to 19. The harvest is accompanied by the sale of fresh fish, refreshments, demonstrations of traditional fishing techniques, and a cultural program. The pond is surrounded by the stunning nature of the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area, offering a peaceful setting for hiking, birdwatching, and relaxation in the heart of the South Bohemian countryside.
